Google's announcement of Gemini 2.0 is not simply another incremental model upgrade. It is, if the company's framing is taken seriously, a declaration that the dominant paradigm of AI is shifting. The era of AI that answers questions is giving way to the era of AI that takes actions. Google is calling this the "agentic era," and Gemini 2.0 is their opening argument for why they should lead it.
The model is described as Google's most capable multimodal AI yet, meaning it can process and generate not just text but images, audio, and other data types in combination. That alone would be noteworthy. But the more consequential claim embedded in the announcement is architectural rather than technical: Gemini 2.0 is designed from the ground up to operate as an agent, meaning it is built to pursue goals across multiple steps, use tools, interact with external systems, and complete tasks with reduced human intervention at each stage. This is a meaningful departure from the conversational AI model that most people have grown accustomed to since ChatGPT made the category mainstream in late 2022.
The word "agentic" has been circulating in AI research circles for some time, but it is now entering the mainstream product vocabulary, and the distinction matters enormously. A conversational AI waits. It responds. It is, in the most literal sense, reactive. An agentic AI initiates. Google has built a more capable model. The more interesting question is what kind of world a more capable model is building around us.
