The empirical record supports this framing more than the skeptics tend to acknowledge. From GPT-2 to GPT-4, from AlphaFold 2 to AlphaFold 3, the jumps in capability have repeatedly surprised even the researchers building these systems. Linear thinking about AI displacement tends to produce forecasts like "X million jobs will be affected over Y years." But if capability growth is genuinely exponential, the timeline compression alone changes the policy calculus entirely. Retraining programs, social safety nets, and educational pipelines all operate on multi-year cycles. An exponential system can outpace those cycles before they complete their first iteration.

Suleyman has spent two decades at the frontier of this technology, first at DeepMind, then at Inflection AI, and now at Microsoft. His credibility on the trajectory question is hard to dismiss. But perhaps the most important thing he is really saying is not about AI at all. It is about the cost of applying the wrong mental model to a fast-moving system.
