The more the Pentagon relies on a small number of commercial AI providers for sensitive military applications, the more leverage those providers accumulate, and the harder it becomes to switch vendors or impose meaningful oversight. The defense industrial base spent decades learning hard lessons about vendor lock-in with traditional weapons systems. AI infrastructure may be even more prone to the same dynamic, because the switching costs are not just financial but cognitive: a military that has built its analytical workflows around one model's particular reasoning style faces enormous friction in migrating to another.

Small modular reactors are being positioned partly as power sources for energy-intensive AI data centers, including potentially those operated by or for the Defense Department. The energy demands of training and running large AI models are substantial and growing, and the convergence of advanced nuclear power with military AI infrastructure suggests a future in which the Pentagon's technological ambitions become deeply entangled with the energy sector in ways that create their own cascading dependencies.

What the Pentagon is building, whether it fully intends to or not, is not just a smarter military AI. It is a new kind of public-private infrastructure for national security, one where the boundaries between government capability and corporate asset are structurally ambiguous. How that ambiguity gets resolved, through contract law, through regulation, or simply through the accumulation of facts on the ground, will shape the character of American military power for a generation.
