Electricity bills across the United States have been climbing, and the narrative has largely written itself: artificial intelligence is hungry, data centres are multiplying, and ordinary Americans are footing the tab. It is a clean story, morally satisfying, and almost entirely wrong in its framing.
The forces actually driving residential electricity costs upward are considerably less glamorous than a ChatGPT query. Aging grid infrastructure, the rising cost of capital for utility investments, extreme weather events that stress transmission networks, and the stubborn persistence of fossil fuel price volatility have all contributed far more meaningfully to the bills landing in American mailboxes. Utilities are passing through the costs of hardening grids against hurricanes, wildfires, and ice storms. Insurance premiums on power infrastructure have surged. Labour costs for line workers have risen. None of this fits neatly onto a server rack.
What makes the data centre narrative particularly seductive is that it contains a grain of truth dressed up as the whole story. Yes, hyperscale computing facilities consume enormous quantities of power. Yes, the buildout of AI infrastructure is accelerating demand projections in ways that grid planners are scrambling to accommodate. But the relationship between data centre load growth and residential rate increases is far more indirect and, in some cases, runs in the opposite direction than most coverage implies.
Here is the part that rarely makes headlines: large industrial and commercial electricity consumers, including data centres, often serve as anchor customers for utilities in ways that spread fixed infrastructure costs across a broader base. When a hyperscale facility signs a long-term power purchase agreement and absorbs gigawatts of baseload demand, it can improve the economics of grid investments that benefit everyone connected to that network. The fixed costs of building and maintaining transmission lines, substations, and generation capacity get divided among more kilowatt-hours sold, which can exert downward pressure on the per-unit rate that residential customers pay.
This is not a hypothetical. Utility regulators in states with significant data centre concentration have, in some cases, pointed to industrial load growth as a stabilising factor in rate cases. The logic is straightforward even if it is counterintuitive: a grid built to serve 100 customers sharing costs is more expensive per customer than one serving 150. Data centres, whatever their environmental footprint, are not simply extracting value from the grid. They are also, in a structural sense, subsidising it.
That does not absolve the industry of scrutiny. The water consumption of air-cooled facilities, the strain on local distribution networks in communities that were never designed to host industrial-scale computing, and the question of who bears the cost of new transmission capacity built specifically to serve a single corporate campus are all legitimate concerns. In some localities, the grid upgrades required to connect a new data centre are being socialised across ratepayers rather than charged directly to the developer, which is a genuine and underexamined transfer of costs. The problem is specific and structural, not the sweeping narrative of AI simply making electricity expensive.
The more consequential systems-level effect may be playing out in the politics of grid investment rather than in anyone's monthly statement. As data centres become the most visible symbol of electricity demand growth, they are attracting regulatory and legislative attention that could reshape how large loads are interconnected and priced. Several states are already moving toward policies that require new large customers to bear more of the direct infrastructure costs associated with their connections. If that trend accelerates, it could actually reduce the cross-subsidy that currently flows, however imperfectly, from industrial customers to residential ones.
In other words, the political backlash against data centres, fuelled in part by a misdiagnosis of what is driving bills higher, could produce policy changes that make the misdiagnosis come true. Forcing data centres to fully internalise their grid costs is arguably the right policy on equity grounds. But it would also remove one of the mechanisms by which their presence has, in some markets, kept residential rates lower than they would otherwise be.
The electricity system is not a simple machine where one actor's consumption straightforwardly raises another's costs. It is a deeply interconnected network of contracts, regulations, infrastructure vintages, and political decisions, and the bill that arrives at your door is the sum of all of them. Blaming the data centre is easier. Understanding the grid is more useful.
