There is a seductive logic to convenience. Every tool humans have ever built, from the wheel to the spreadsheet, has been designed to reduce the effort required to accomplish something. AI fits neatly into that lineage, and most people who use it regularly would say it is simply the latest and most powerful iteration of that ancient project. But a growing number of researchers are beginning to ask whether AI has crossed a threshold that earlier technologies never reached, one where the removal of friction stops being a feature and starts being a problem.

A commentary published on February 24 in Communications Psychology, titled "Against Frictionless AI," makes exactly that argument. The researchers behind it are not technophobes or luddites. Their concern is more precise and, in some ways, more unsettling: that when AI makes tasks too easy, it quietly erodes the cognitive and emotional processes that those tasks were building in the first place. Summarizing a document, drafting a difficult email, working through a coding problem, or even sitting with the discomfort of not knowing what to say to a grieving friend, these are not just tasks to be completed. They are, in many cases, the very activities through which people develop competence, resilience, and a sense of self-efficacy.

The implications stretch well beyond individual productivity. When effort is systematically removed from learning and problem-solving, the feedback loops that normally reinforce skill development are broken. A medical student who uses AI to reason through a diagnosis may arrive at the correct answer without ever building the diagnostic intuition that comes from struggling through uncertainty. A junior analyst who delegates research synthesis to a language model may produce polished output while remaining, underneath, analytically hollow. The output looks the same. The person is not.

The Friction We Did Not Know We Needed

Psychologists have long understood that difficulty is not the enemy of learning. It is frequently the mechanism of it. The concept of "desirable difficulty," developed by Robert Bjork at UCLA, holds that certain forms of struggle during learning, retrieval practice, spaced repetition, interleaved problem sets, produce better long-term retention and transfer precisely because they are harder in the moment. Frictionless AI, by contrast, optimizes for the moment. It makes the immediate task easier while potentially mortgaging the longer-term development that the struggle would have produced.

This is not a hypothetical concern. There is already evidence from earlier, less powerful technologies that ease can carry hidden costs. Studies on GPS navigation have found that heavy reliance on turn-by-turn directions weakens spatial memory and the ability to form cognitive maps. Calculator use in early education has been debated for decades on similar grounds. AI is orders of magnitude more capable than either of those tools, and its reach is far broader, extending into writing, reasoning, emotional processing, and creative work in ways that GPS and calculators never did.

The emotional support dimension deserves particular attention. AI companions and mental health chatbots are now widely available, and for people in genuine crisis or without access to professional care, they may provide real value. But the researchers behind "Against Frictionless AI" appear to be pointing at something subtler: the risk that outsourcing emotional labor to a machine, one that is endlessly patient, never tired, and algorithmically calibrated to be supportive, could gradually diminish a person's capacity to tolerate relational friction, to repair ruptures with other humans, or to develop the emotional vocabulary that only comes from navigating difficulty with other people.

A Systems Problem, Not a Personal One

What makes this more than a story about individual habits is the scale at which these tools are being adopted. When millions of students, professionals, and individuals simultaneously offload the same categories of cognitive and emotional work, the second-order effects become societal. Workplaces may find themselves with employees who are highly productive in AI-assisted environments but brittle when the tools are unavailable or insufficient. Educational systems may produce graduates who are fluent in prompting but underdeveloped in the slower, harder work of original thought. Democracies that depend on citizens capable of evaluating complex arguments may find that capacity quietly atrophying.

None of this means AI should be abandoned or that its benefits are illusory. The technology is genuinely transformative, and the researchers raising these concerns are not calling for its rejection. What they are calling for is a more honest accounting of what frictionlessness costs, and a design philosophy that sometimes, deliberately, puts the struggle back in.

The most interesting question going forward may not be how much more AI can do for us, but whether the institutions responsible for human development, schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, will move quickly enough to draw the lines that the market, left alone, has little incentive to draw itself.
